Blue’s rarity proves inspiring as it does not often occur in the natural world. While a small collection of water is absent of color, the vast sea appears deeply blue. The sky, the mountains, and the sea – the mysterious color of blue reflects the abstract beauty of nature. Blue can complement within a broader palette, or blue can be powerful alone. Yves Klein took a philosophical approach in his monochromatic works in creating the dimensionless International Klein Blue, a facet of his career-long exploration of space and “the void.” The color blue is often associated with melancholy, calmness, and reliability. Picasso’s Blue Period consisted of blue toned melancholic figures. The blues as emotion have been communicated through a variety of artistic disciplines, especially in the musical genre which emerged to voice injustices. The use of art as a means of expressing the blues reminds us of the therapeutic merits of art, and the universal need to declare and assert the passions of the human spirit.
