Exciting Milestones for Elizabeth Whiteley’s Work

Two of Elizabeth Whiteley’s silverpoint drawings were selected to appear in “Plant Cure”, an exhibition at Central Booking Gallery in New York City. The exhibit runs to October 29. The drawings are from her recent series which uses plants as subjectsfor exploration of frieze group symmetries. The plants in the drawings, Datura metel and Gingko biloba, have medicinal uses.

Copies of Elizabeth’s artist’s book, “Deck of Cards”, have been acquired by the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Tate Britain. And, another of her artist’s books, “Transformations”, is now in the National Gallery of Art.

The Central Virginia Botanical Artists (CVABA) staged a successful August exhibit at The Cultural Art Center at Glen Allen, Virginia. BASNCR members whose art was exhibited included Paula Blair (Exhibit Organizer), Hazel Buys, Susan Estes, C.B. Exley, Gail Goodrich Harwood, Ellen Keane, Juliet Kirby, Judy M. Thomas and Judith Towers.

Botanica 2017: the Art and Science of Plants

Groundwork: Bulbs, Corms, Tubers, Roots, and Rhizomes

This Central Virginia Botanical Artists (CVABA) Invitational Exhibit is now showing at Tuckahoe Library in Richmond through June 30th. BASNCR artists exhibiting images of everything from hyacinth bulbs to carrots to turnips to radishes to jicama and golden beets are Paula Blair, Hazel Buys, Susan Estes, C.B. Exley, Gail Goodrich Harwood, Ellen Keane, Judy M. Thomas and Judith Towers. The show is accompanied by showcases featuring nature journals and botanically themed fiber works.

BASNCR Exhibit Opens April 6th at the Athenaeum in Alexandria

“Natural Attraction: Virginia Plants and their Pollinators” will be open from April 6-May14 at the Athenaeum in Alexandria, VA. The show runs concurrently with a photography exhibit featuring bees. “Natural Attraction” entries were juried by Susan Frei Nathan, botanical art specialist and owner of Susan Frei Nathan Fine Works on Paper, LLC, NY, NY.

Artists exhibiting in the Athenaeum show are: Joseph Bailey, Carol Tudor Beach, Tina Thieme Brown, Anne Clippinger, Joan Ducore, Margaret Farr, Gail Goodrich Harwood, Barbara Hanft, Mary Page Hickey, Pamela Mason, Elena Maza-Borkland, Jonathan Paul, Barbara Schoeberl, Alice Tangerini and Mary Jane Zander.

Jonathan Paul’s work was chosen to promote the exhibit.

Opening reception: Sunday, April 9th, 4-6 pm.

National Cathedral Exhibit Opens

“The Spirit in Bloom: Inspiration from the Outdoors at the National Cathedral” will be open from April 4-May 17. The exhibit is located on the 7th floor of the Cathedral Tower. BASNCR artists exhibiting in this invitational event are: Clarissa Bonde, Tina Thieme Brown, Anne Clippinger, Carolyn de Haas, Joan Ducore, Mary Elcano, Margaret Farr, Gail Goodrich Harwood, Barbara Hanft, Pamela Mason, Elena Maza-Borkland, Marsha Ogden, Kandy Phillips, Alice Tangerini, Paula Tobenfeld and Elizabeth Whitely.

Montgomery County Exhibit Opens September 9th

LIVIN%20WELL%20FLYER[1]The opening reception of Living Well: Plants that Nourish and Heal – a juried exhibition of botanical art by Montgomery County visual artists – will be held 6-8 pm Friday, September 9th at The Betty Mae Kramer Gallery and Music Room. The works in this exhibition emerged from a County-wide call to artists for works of botanical art depicting plants or fungi relating to the theme “Plants that Nourish and Heal”. This exhibition was juried by Barbara Hanft, Joan Ducore, and Amina Cooper, Gallery Curator. The opening reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The exhibition continues through December 9th.

Karen Coleman’s Art in Arlington Show

Bloodroot%20graphite%2072dpi[1]Karen Coleman will be in a 4-person art show at the Barry Gallery at Marymount University, Sept 9 – Oct 14. The public is invited to the opening reception, Friday, Sept 9, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. This will be a “Black & White” exhibit with each artist having a totally different genre, style, and approach with the media; Karen’s will be botanicals in ink and graphite.

The Barry Gallery, located in the Reinsch Library at Marymount, 2807 North Glebe RD, Arlington, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is free.
